Modern Slavery – closer than you think

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018

Modern slavery is one of the 22 priorities for which residents can vote in our quarterly survey. But what is modern slavery, and does it really take place within our communities?

The video below reports on a recent Thames Valley Police operation in Iver, working with local authorities, the National Crime Agency and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority. Three arrests were made and eight people safeguarded – possibly more.

Modern Slavery is one of the abuses targetted by Thames Valley Police’s Hidden Harm Campaign. This seeks to raise awareness of underreported crimes such as Modern Slavery. As explained in the video, this could be happening within your community, sometimes with victims not seeing themselves as victims. By watching the video, you can learn some of the common warning signs.

Any concerns regarding Modern Slavery or other forms of abuse can be reported by calling 101, or via the Thames Valley Police website. Alternatively, you can call the Modern Slavery Helpline, on 08000 121 700.
